Discover Taiwan at the 2016 Guadalajara International Book Fair!
2016/12/02

The Taiwan Pavilion at the 2016 Guadalajara International Book Fair (Feria Internacional del Libro de Guadalajara, FIL) will be themed DESCUBRA TAIWÁN Nov. 26 – Dec. 4 in Mexico. Organized by the Taipei Book Fair Foundation under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture, the pavilion features 436 titles from 80 local publishers, showcasing the rich cultural power and diverse creative dynamics of Taiwan. A vast array of topics will highlight the robust development of children's picture book publishing in Taiwan; including the newest comics, feature publishers, recommended illustrators, Mandarin learning materials, award winners, licensed titles, and topical books.

The 72-square-meter Taiwan Pavilion is located at a highly-competitive section of the book fair, next to the French, German, Korean, and UK national pavilions, which demonstrates international interest in the local publishing scene. The yellow and grey decor incorporate the creative elements of this year’s feature artist Joyce Sun, whose book Afternoon, and the bicycle in it, serve as an inspiration for the design of the pavilion. Set against the tropical flora of Mexico, the eye-catching DESCUBRA TAIWÁN theme exudes hospitality and brings a breath of fresh air to the international section of the FIL.

A copyright matchmaking session, one of the highlights of this year’s event, will be held at the Taiwan Pavilion, and will bring representatives from Taiwan’s premier publishing houses face-to-face with international copyright professionals. It is believed that such an occasion will deepen mutual understanding in terms of feature writers, industrial development, and multilateral cooperation in different countries. The matchmaking efforts are also expected to pave the path for copyright transactions at the book fair.

Two special hands-on activities—“Coloring Taiwan” and “DIY Writing”—are available at the Taiwan Pavilion targeting regular visitors at the book fair. Also available at the pavilion are coloring cards based on illustrations from Joyce Sun’s latest creation “A Tour of Taiwan’s Six Metropolises.” Visitors can get to color such local features and landmarks as Kaohsiung’s paper umbrellas and Tainan’s Confucius Shrine, as well as the iconic Queen’s Head rock formation in northern Taiwan. A blackboard set up at the pavilion also enables visitors to learn about and write Chinese characters, lending an in-depth perspective into the beauty and joy of one of the world’s fastest-spreading languages.

Joyce Sun first came into international fame as the first Taiwanese illustrator to win a special mention for non-fiction work with A Journey in Beijing at the 2015 Bologna Children’s Book Fair. Her works were a sensation at that year’s FIL too, with Mexico’s La Cifra Editorial clinching the rights for Afternoon, due for publication soon in the Latin American market. This goes to show the immense potential for Taiwanese writers and illustrators in the international market with continued efforts in expanding global outreach. A speech by the name of “The Idea of Textless Picture Books” will be given by Sun from 4:15 to 5:00 pm, Nov. 27th, at the Hilton Guadalajara. She will engage in direct interaction with the audience, sharing her thoughts and experiences in creating her art.

Celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, the Guadalajara International Book Fair is the largest publishing event in Latin America, presenting a most auspicious opportunity for Taiwanese publishers to explore the market and promote local artists in the global Spanish-speaking community. The opening event for this year’s Taiwan Pavilion is set for 4:00 pm on Nov. 28th. You are cordially invited to join us in sampling the beauty of Taiwan and experiencing the unique charm of Taiwanese publications.
