Taiwan pavilion opens to great acclaim at 2015 Bologna Children’s Book Fair

The Taiwan pavilion opened March 30 at the 2015 Bologna Children’s Book Fair, with various distinguished international publishers attending the event. Also participating were this year’s feature artists Hsu Kung LIU, who was selected for the Bologna Illustrators Exhibition 2015; Bei Lynn, winner of numerous children’s book awards in Taiwan; and Hsin-yu SUN, who won a special mention in nonfiction at the 2015 Bologna Ragazzi Award. Sun’s award-winning title One Day in Beijing was met with enthusiastic response at the event and is expected to be translated into multiple languages in the near future.

This year, also featuring the iconic little beauty design by Jimmy LIAO, the pavilion continued to be a highlight among the Asian exhibitors at Hall 29. The feature artists section, in particular, drew tremendous attention with the 3-D sculptures based on Liu’s and Lynn’s signature characters. Alain Serres, founder of celebrated French children’s book publisher Rue du Monde, poured effusive praise on the innovative creativity demonstrated by the Taiwan pavilion.

Sun’s One Day in Beijing won a special mention at the nonfiction category, and she shared the honor with her publisher Hsiao Lu Publishing Co. This was the first time for a Taiwanese title to win the Ragazzi Award in its 50-year history, which was marked by a diachronic retrospective at this year’s book fair. Sun’s work stood out among 200 contestants from 24 countries and over 1,000 exhibits from 42 countries. She wore Taiwan’s national flag on stage to receive the honor, in the hopes that local illustrations can win wider recognition around the globe.

Guests at the opening ceremony included Viera Anoškinova, Head of BIB Secretariat, Slovakia、Alain Serres, Founder of Rue du Monde, Kaidi Urmet, President of Estonian Publishers Association, Kamy Pakdel, Art Director of Actes Sud, Jaunius Lingys, CEO of tikra knyga, Linda Pevere, Manager of DK, Balázs Eszter, Editor in Chief of Kolibri, Zoltán Jeney, Head of Books and Translation Office in Hungary, Dolores Manzabi, Brazilian Publishers Manager of Brazilian Book Chamber, and representatives from Guadalajara International Book Fair and Australian Publishers Association, etc.
