The Taiwan pavilion at the 2015 Bologna Children’s Book Fair, scheduled for March 30-April 2, will be themed ”Ciao Taiwan” and feature three celebrated local illustrators. They are Hsu Kung LIU, who is selected for the Bologna Illustrators Exhibition 2015; Bei Lynn, winner of numerous children’s book awards in Taiwan; and Hsin-yu SUN, who won a special mention in nonfiction at the 2015 Bologna Ragazzi Award. These are in addition to a diverse lineup of 452 children’s books and comics from 38 Taiwan publishers.

There was some good news ahead of the event this year, said Director Alice Wang of sponsor Ministry of Culture’s Department of Humanities and Publications. Five illustrators have been selected for the Bologna Illustrators Exhibition2015, the second-highest number ever. Moreover, for Taiwan’s debut at the Bologna Ragazzi Award, Hsin-yu SUN’s One Day in Beijing was recognized with a special mention. These achievements go to show that Taiwan has made significant headway both on the creative and publishing fronts, Wang said.

The sentiment was echoed by Chair Doris Wang of the organizer Taipei Book Fair Foundation, who said the Taiwan pavilion will seek to promote Taiwan’s promising authors and publications through a wide range of activities, including theme exhibitions and events joined by recommended illustrators and publishers.

Launched in 1963, the Bologna event is one of the most important of its kind dedicated to children’s publishing, featuring over 2,000 artists vying for top honors at its prestigious illustrators exhibition. This year’s event features 1,200 publishers from 75 countries and territories, and is estimated to attract more than 25,000 trade representatives.

The Taiwan pavilion, organized by the TBFF under the auspices of the MOC, will be located at Hall29 B46. Starting in 2000, Taiwan has seen local artists selected for the Bologna event for 16 consecutive years. Page Tsou is one of the most accomplished illustrators in this regard. He was selected for the event thrice since 2008 and went on to claim the International Award for Illustration Bologna Children’s Book Fair - Fundación SM in 2011. With five illustrators selected for the illustrators exhibition this year, Taiwan is witnessing a strong resurgence after the peak in 2006. And Sun’s Ragazzi honor adds further glory to the nation’s illustrious history in Bologna.

The Taiwan pavilion’s Recommended Illustrators section will showcase the works of seven Taiwan illustrators, including Hsu Kung LIU, Bei Lynn and Hsin-yu SUN. The three feature artists will also participate in the matchmaking events in collaboration with the Dutch Foundation for Literature and Croatian Children's Books Publishers Association. It is expected to enhance copyright exchanges between Taiwan publishers and the international children’s book market.
